ARRAN OVER THE SOUND OF BUTE

Isle of Arran, from Argyll across the sound of Bute. Often referred to as “Scotland in miniature”, Arran is divided into “Highland” and “Lowland” areas by the Highland Boundary Fault.  The Island draws tourists and geologists in droves. This view features Goatfell, the highest point at 2,866ft, and the profile of the “Sleeping Warrior”, the horizon which resembles a resting figure with helmet and crossed arms.

SOUND OF MULL

Reflections of the evening sun over the Sound of Mull.

SKYE FROM BEALACH NA BA, APPLECROSS

The road to Applecross over the Bealach Na Ba “the pass of the cattle” must be one of the most spectacular in Scotland. Not for timid drivers, this road winds its way over a high mountain pass then down to the small village of Applecross on the other side. At the summit of the pass, on a clear day, this is the amazing view across the sea over to the mountains of the Isle of Skye.

SKYE & RAASAY

This view of Skye and Raasay is from Sand Beach near Applecross in Wester Ross. These views across the Inner Sound to the Cuillin mountains of Skye and the flat topped Dun Cann of Raasay are spectacular. It’s easy to send hours sitting on the sand watching the light change until the sun disappears behind the hills. The ancient settlement of Applecross was accessible only by boat and the steep and winding Bealach Na Ba until the mid 1970s, when a coastal road was built.

APPLECROSS TO SKYE AND SCAPAY

The Inner Sound is a stretch of sea between Skye and mainland Scotland. Within the sound are many smaller islands such as Scaplay. This is the view across the sound from Applecross.
